Jana Kramer is enjoying success on all fronts. She stars in the brand-new movie Heart of the Country, and is currently opening for music superstar Blake Shelton on his Ten Times Crazier tour. Jana recently took a break from her busy schedule to chat with BFTV about her new flick and her favorite Blake story.
“When I read the script I was like, ‘I have to do this,’” she said of taking the starring role in Heart of the Country, which is based on the novel by Rene Gutteridge and John Ward about a former singer who returns home after her husband runs into trouble. “It was so crazy. There were so many similarities between me and the character. And I could sing in it. I basically begged both my teams to make this happen.”
“I think I did the role the best that I could have and made it as real as possible,” she reflected. “Probably the last scene was the most difficult for me, because it was raw emotions, [but] the whole film, there were things that I brought in from my own life. I definitely brought a lot of me into it. I just hope that [people] laugh, they smile.”
As both an actress and a singer, Jana had plenty of suggestions for folks who enjoy the movie and want to check out more of her work. “It just depends on what they like,” she told us. “To point back to my music, go buy my album or come see a show. I’m working on my second album right now. But if they like the drama, then One Tree Hill [or] Entourage.” And she’s hoping to sustain both aspects of her career going forward. “I definitely want to do both,” she added.
Jana is one of the folks joining Blake Shelton on his current tour, and Blake is one of the biggest personalities in music, so we asked her if she has a Blake Shelton story yet. As it turns out, she does. “The first night of the tour, I had gone to bed kind of early,” she said. “About 12:30, I get a knock on my back door, and it’s Blake Shelton. He goes, ‘This is the first night of tour, you’re hanging out with us.’ He’s a great guy.”
Her character in Heart of the Country learns a lot about herself, so what’s one piece of advice from her own life experience that Jana would pass on to others? “Just to believe in yourself,” she told us, “and never give up.”
